Performance

ModeLight powerBeam distanceBattery burn time
Low8 lumens9 meters (29 feet)150 hours
Medium180 lumens45 meters (147 feet)10 hours
High400 lumens100 meters (328 feet)5 hours

The performance of the flashlight is very good. The 3 intensities are quite different from each other and that is why the option to adjust the lighting stands out a lot and for the better, in case any of the 3 predefined modes do not cover your needs. The average intensity of 180 lumens is sufficient for most situations. It has a maximum power of 400 lumens and an autonomy of up to 150 hours, with a very bright light that reaches up to 100 meters away. The red light is ideal for preserving night vision. The green light is useful for better-seeing details in the dark. Blue light is perfect for highlighting fluorescent colors.

The control buttons work well and do not get stuck or wear out. The battery indicator is very practical to know when to change the batteries or recharge them. The strap adjusts well to different head sizes and exerts adequate pressure without being suffocating, so it will keep the front in place even during the constant pounding of a jog.

I have tested the flashlight in different situations and scenarios, such as on a night hike, in a cave, at a campsite, and in low-light warehouse work. In all cases, it has worked very well for me and has given me security and confidence. I think the only thing to consider is the need to have more spare batteries if you go for a walk or an excursion that requires several hours of lighting without the possibility of accessing electricity to recharge the batteries.

How to use – Black Diamond Storm 400 tutorial

  • It has two upper buttons, a large main one in the center and a smaller one on the left (from the perspective of having it on)
  • The main button is used to turn on/off and to modify the light intensity. With each click you will go through the low, medium and high intensity levels. Additionally, you can gradually raise or lower the intensity by holding down the main button and releasing it when you have the desired intensity.
  • The secondary button will change the type of light, going from a wide beam with a shorter range to a more focused beam with a longer range. With another click you will go to the RGB light (red, green and blue). Each type of light is emitted from a different LED.
  • To change between the colors of the RGB spotlight, you must be on red light and hold down the secondary button, this way it will cycle through each color. Release when you have the desired color.
  • You can access full power mode – which combines wide beam and focused beam – simply by touching the front panel to the right of the device. They call it Power Tap. Another tap will disable it.
  • For strobe mode, double click on the main button from any Mode you are in. It is deactivated with double click. If you tap the Power Tap during strobe mode, it will change the flashing rate to S.O.S.
  • It has memory, meaning that every time you turn it on it will do so in the same light mode that it was when you turned it off.
  • To activate the Transport Lock, press and hold the two top buttons for 3 seconds, and the red LED will flash to warn. Repeat to unlock.
  • If it falls into water or water gets into the battery compartment, remove the batteries and let them dry before using again.

Parts and frame

Black Diamond headlamps always have an excellent finish, and the Storm 400 is no exception. The light is made up of three individual Led spotlights: a large one in the center for a long-range focused light beam, a small one on the side for a shorter-range wide light beam, and another small one for RGB colors. It has IP67 protection level, making it completely resistant to dust and sand and can withstand being submerged up to 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes. On the upper side above the lights are the two control buttons, a larger main one in the center and a smaller secondary one towards one edge.

At the back of the body you will find the battery compartment, which opens from the side. The lid does not come off, it has a fixed hook on one side. On the right side is the Power Tap “button”, which activates High Power Mode, it is a touch button with the correct sensitivity, in this function the 2 white LEDs will light up simultaneously. A great improvement over other previous models is that this one can tilt downwards, allowing the light beam to be directed with greater precision.

On the left side there are 3 lights that indicate the battery level, to know how much energy you have left you must press and hold the main button for 6 seconds and you will see how much energy you have left according to the following configuration:

  • 3 steady lights: between 100% and 80% charge.
  • 2 solid lights and one flashing: between 80% and 60% charge
  • 2 steady lights: between 60% and 40% charge
  • 1 steady light and 1 flashing: between 40% and 20% charge
  • 1 steady light: between 20% and 10% charge
  • 1 flashing light: less than 10% charge

The strap that holds the headlamp to your head is elastic, adjustable and comfortable, with a reflective logo to improve visibility, which can be removed for washing. The entire set is very comfortable and does not present any discomfort, especially because it is very light. Although it does not have padding in the contact area between the flashlight and the forehead, it does not feel uncomfortable when in contact with the skin.

Opinion 5/5

From the moment you have the box in your hand you can already tell that you have a good product.
When you have it in your hand you notice that its materials are of very good quality.
It is robust and has a very cool design. It is the first time that I have a headlamp from this brand and I can only say that the light it gives at maximum power and the good consumption it has are impressive. It has RGB function in red, blue and green. And a tactile side that just swipe your finger turns it to maximum power. I would buy it again without hesitation.

Opinion 4/5

Good headlamp and with the expected quality. I was looking for a headlamp that will withstand getting wet and this one has held up.

Opinion 3/5

This is a great headlamp, but with 4 AAA batteries it is much heavier than other models.
